چکیده

The current study used head mounted eyetracking to examine the time course and nature of processing filler-gap relations in wh-questions, and the role of verb argument frame information. Subjects listened to a short narrative while viewing pictures of entities mentioned in the story and answered an auditorily presented question; eye movements in response to these questions were recorded. In Experiment 1, subjects heard wh-questions (e.g., “What did Jody squash the spider with?”), contrasted with yes/no question questions with no gap (e.g., “Did Jody squash a spider with her shoe?”). Results showed evidence of anticipatory gap projection at the verb only for whquestions. In Experiment 2, wh-questions containing a strongly transitive verb used intransitively (e.g., “Who did the mother bear kill for?”) were compared to questions containing an intransitive verb (e.g., “Who did the mother bear die for?”). Verb-argument information was used to constrain hypotheses of possible gap locations. These results provide converging evidence for active on-line resolution of syntactic dependencies mediated by verb argument structure, and introduce an important methodological tool for investigating processes that underlie syntactic dependencies.

Eye movements and lexical access in spoken-language comprehension: evaluating a linking hypothesis between fixations and linguistic processing.

A growing number of researchers in the sentence processing community are using eye movements to address issues in spoken language comprehension. Experiments using this paradigm have shown that visually presented referential information, including properties of referents relevant to specific actions, influences even the earliest moments of syntactic processing. Methodological concerns about task...

Integration of visual and linguistic information in spoken language comprehension.

Psycholinguists have commonly assumed that as a spoken linguistic message unfolds over time, it is initially structured by a syntactic processing module that is encapsulated from information provided by other perceptual and cognitive systems. To test the effects of relevant visual context on the rapid mental processes that accompany spoken language comprehension, eye movements were recorded wit...

Visual scenes trigger immediate syntactic reanalysis: evidence from ERPs during situated spoken comprehension.

A central topic in sentence comprehension research is the kinds of information and mechanisms involved in resolving temporary ambiguity regarding the syntactic structure of a sentence. Gaze patterns in scenes during spoken sentence comprehension have provided strong evidence that visual scenes trigger rapid syntactic reanalysis. However, they have also been interpreted as reflecting nonlinguist...

Children’s Eye Movements during Listening: Developmental Evidence for a Constraint-Based Theory of Sentence Processing

Many comprehension studies of grammatical development have focused on the ultimate interpretation that children assign to sentences and phrases, yielding somewhat static snapshots of children's emerging grammatical knowledge. Studies of the dynamic processes underlying children's language comprehension have to date been rare, owing in part to the lack of online sentence processing techniques su...
